Compiled from various email threads on (and before) the nascent hande-dev list.  The HANDE project's paper [Spencer14]_ for the 2nd Workshop on Sustainable Software for Science: Practice and Experiences (WSSSPE2) at SC14 contains a summary of working practices and our approach for developing software in an academic environment.
